Norcen birdsfoot trefoil is a perennial forage legume that is non-bloating.  Norcen, a ‘European’ type of birdsfoot trefoil, has more upright growth and can be used for both hay and/or pasture. Birdsfoot trefoil does well in areas that are too wet for alfalfa and well adapted to poorly drained or acidic soils.  It will not tolerate extended periods of standing water.  Birdsfoot trefoil requires a rest period of 40-45 days between harvests and some leaf area must be left to encourage regrowth. Norcen birdsfoot trefoil is one of the highest yielding varieties of trefoil available in today’s market and also one of the most winter-hardy.

Seed is coated and pre-inoculated.

Available in a 50 lb bag.

Description

Norcen Birdsfoot Trefoil is a non-bloating, perennial forage that does well in poorly drained, heavier soils.  Norcen is one of the higher yielding varieties of birdsfoot trefoil.

Slow to establish and vulnerable to competition from other plant species during establishment.  Spring seedings are preferred by many over summer seedings.

Before seeding, trefoil seed should be inoculated.  Recommended seeding rate is 8-10 lbs./acre and 2-8 lbs./acre in a mix.  Plant when soil temps are 50 degrees F at a 4″ depth into a firm, weed-free seedbed with good soil-to-seed contact to enhance germination and seedling growth.  Because of the small seed size, plant no deeper than 1/4″ deep.
