Clovers & Chicory is a blend of high quality chicory, large leaf ladino clover, Frosty Berseem clover,  red clover and Fixation Balansa clover.

The chicory is a high quality, reduced bolting chicory blend.  Reduced bolting equates to higher feed value.  Leafiness of the chicory is impressive.  It is an excellent source of digestible energy, protein and minerals.  It’s deep taproot lends persistence and production in extreme heat and moisture stress.  It also exhibits winter hardiness.  High palatability.

The ladino clover is a large leaf variety that grows to medium height.  Shows tremendous nitrogen fixing capacity, persistence and great winter hardiness.  Does not lignify in hot weather like alfalfa, red clover and most other forages.  This clover will thrive on soils with a pH of 5.5 or higher.  High palatability and nutritive value.

The Frosty Berseem clover emerges quickly from the ground and with adequate moisture will be drawing in deer as quick as 45 days.  Crude protein levels typically exceeding 20%.  Frosty Berseem clover was the #1 clover for drawing in deer in recent trials at Mississippi State University.

The red clover is a quick growing crop, easily established and produces high quality forage.  Clover is very persistent with an aggressive root structure, choking out most weeds.

The Fixation Balansa clover is the most cold tolerant annual clover;  it can withstand temperatures down to -14º F.  It can tolerate a variety of soil types, low pH, partial shade and can even grow through short periods of standing water.  Has a deep tap root that aids with soil drainage and water infiltration.  Typically over 25% crude protein.  Highly palatable to deer.  In the same Mississippi State University trials, Fixation was the #2 clover for drawing in deer.

Planting Instructions

Clovers & Chicory can be frost seeded, drilled or broadcasted into an area with minimal plant competition.

For frost seeding, just before the last snow or the last few frosts of the season prior to spring green up.  It’s better to frost seed a bit early than late as melting snow and/or thawing frost are key to getting the seed worked down into the soil for a good seed-to-soil contact.  It is best to frost seed in the morning than later in the day to reduce compaction on the thawing soil.  For best coverage, apply 1/2 the seed across the plot and then apply the second 1/2 at a 90º angle for more even coverage.

For broadcasting seed, broadcast on a firm, well prepared seed bed that is free of large clods of dirt and vegetation as the seed needs to be able to get down into the soil.  After broadcasting, roll or cultipack the plot again to make sure their is good seed-to-soil contact.  Make sure not to work the seed into the ground too deep.  1/8″ to 1/4″ is ideal.

For frost seeding or broadcasting, use a seeding rate of 10 to 15 lbs. per acre.

If using a drill, use a seeding rate of 6-8 lbs. per acre.  Seeding depth of 1/8″ to 1/4″ is ideal.

Besides frost seeding, Clovers & Chicory can be planted in early spring or late summer.  Late summer seedings should be done 6-8 weeks before average first frost date.

Planting Guide

Full or partial sun, logging roads, backwoods plots, borders around bedding areas.  If planting in an area with a lot of shade, we recommend planting in early spring to allow plants time to establish before leaf canopy develops.

pH range:  5.5 to 7.0

Soil type:  Prefers well-drained soils with good fertility.  Works on most soils with adequate moisture.
