Rye is a very popular cereal grain for cover crops or forage through late fall and early spring. Very aggressive to establish with good winter hardiness. Alleopathy effect from the rye helps suppresses winter annual weeds. Cereal rye with its extensive fibrous root system is excellent for mellowing the soil. Rye matures very quickly in the spring. Harvest before “boot stage” for best quality. Forage yield is typically between 1-1/2 to 2 ton DM/acre.
Seed in the fall at 30-50 lbs/acre as a cover crop, 150 lbs/acre for forage.
