Description
4010 Forage Peas have been the standard in the forage industry. It is a high yielding, good forage quality pea. It produces lavender flowers on a very tall (long-vined) plant. 4010 Forage Peas produce small seed size (~4,000 seeds/lb.) with very durable seed-coats and excellent seedling vigor. A small percentage of the seed will remain dormant (hard) and emerge in subsequent years. Therefore it is important to avoid planting food-grade (yellow or green) pea varieties on ground planted to 4010 for several years (up to 5-7).
Suggested seeding rates: Seed 80-100 lbs/acre.
Approx. seeds per lb.: 4,000
Seeding depth: Drill 1″ deep in a firm, moist seedbed.
Preferred soils: Widely adapted to many soil types, prefer well drained soils.
Establishment: Peas should be inoculated with a pea/vetch inoculant at planting for best growth and nitrogen fixation. Plant early spring for best results as peas grow best in cool weather.
Management: For spring planted peas, harvest in about 60 days. If planted with a small grain such as oats, spring triticale or spring barley, harvest when the grain is at boot stage for best quality. Otherwise, harvest when peas are beginning to blossom.
